Voltas Hail Storm

The apparatus is simple: a transparent plastic cylinder, mounted on a stable metal base. Add a lightweight material like vermiculite, or pith or aluminum foil balls, by pouring them into the cylinder. Link the cylinder to a Van de Graaf Generator, and the vermiculite goes crazy, bouncing around rapidly, non-stop. The device works by using the “particles” to transport charge from the top (generator) to the bottom (ground). Or replace the vermiculite with smoke for a smoke precipitation demonstration. Apparatus is 17.5cm high and includes base, support rod, ball, vermiculite packet and instructions. Requires a charge source.
