Basic Nuclear Lab
Inexpensive, Compact Nuclear Lab-PC-Based or Stand Alone
This is the ideal student work station for introducing nuclear science. The fully integrated system includes all the features you need: - Built-in Geiger counter for detecting a, b and g radiation
- Large, 6-digit LED display with preset timer
- Convenient self-contained, 10-piece absorber set
- Variable high voltage for plateau experiments
- Built-in computer interface and supplied software for PC or Mac
- Easy data file transfer to most spreadsheets
- Includes sources, manuals and accessories
Housed in a single rugged steel case, the Basic Nuclear Lab contains an internal 15mm GM detector with a digitally controlled variable high voltage supply and a 5-position sample stand. Also built-in are a 6-decade scaler with a preset timer, a computer interface for connection to a PC, IBM compatible or Mac, and a 10-piece absorber set including polymer, aluminum, and lead absorbers. Three low-activity radioisotope sources come with the unit (Co-60, Sr-90 and Po-210, exempt from state and NRC licensing). This "nuclear power house" is very simple to operate and lets your students perform a wide range of experiments including range of alpha particles, absorption of beta particles, inverse square law, half-life decay, detection efficiency and counting statistics, and many more. A student manual and teacher's guide are included. Although all experiments can be performed with the unit alone, the real power of the system is unfolded when the data are passed directly to a computer, where the supplied software can display counts digitally and count rates either digitally or in analog form, as well as perform preset counting runs and record the data. Files may be transferred to a spreadsheet program or printed. The IBM software will run with or without Windows, and the Mac software will run on all Macs.
