Mechanical Equivalent of Heat Bag

This attractive variation on the simple fall method for measuring the equivalence of heat and mechanical energy consists of a sturdy cloth drawstring bag lined with a protective plastic bag and filled with 1000g of copper turnings. A sensitive mercury thermometer (040C x 0.2C) is also provided. The temperature of the turnings is measured at the start of the experiment, then the bag is dropped from a measured height a predetermined number of times. The thermometer is then reinserted and the temperature of the copper is checked. The measurement may be repeated using varying heights and numbers of falls and the results plotted to show the relationship between the potential energy lost and the heat energy gained in the experiment.
