Lab 3 (Part A): Analysis and Determination of Cell Mitosis and DNA Extraction
|
Students learn the various stages in mitosis and compare mitotic events in plant and animal cells. Onion root tips are fixed and stained to identify the various stages and duration of mitosis. Purified DNA is also spooled for visualization of the genetic material. For 10 lab groups. Duration: 60 minutes or one lab period.
Kit contents:
- Onion root tip slides
- Whitefish blastula slides
- Onion DNA extraction buffer
- Toluidine blue-O stain
- Gel loading solution
- 15 mL Conical test tubes
- Instructions
Required, but not included: microscopes, slides and coverslips, Bunsen burners, 13 x 100 mm test tubes, 5 mL pipets, Pasteur pipets and bulbs, razor blades or scalpels, HCl acid (1 N), ethanol (95%), onion bulbs, and personal safety equipment.
