This demonstration device allows students to accurately determine buoyancy by measuring the volume of fluid displaced by an object and the mass of that displaced fluid. If an object floats, its upward buoyant force equals its weight. The volume of fluid displaced by a floating object is only the volume of the object beneath the surface, because a floating object will push down into the liquid until the mass of the liquid displaced equals the mass of the object. Using this device and a mass scale, you can measure the actual mass of the displaced fluid, enabling a precision study. Conduct a straightforward experiment with Archimedes Ark or use equations in conjunction with the investigation for a quantitative approach to proving Archimedes principle.
