Uniform Circular Motion With a Tethered Airplane
|
Around and around and around it goes and where it stops...everybody knows! Your lessons on tension, weight, speed, circular motion and the physics of air flight will all get a lift with this uniform circular motion lab. The ceiling tether is attached to your ceiling with two "C" clamps. A mototrized toy airplane is tethered to the end of the spring scale. When the plane is turned on it moves in a horizontal uniform circular turn. Students use Newton's Second Law of Motion, some geometry, algebra and trigonometry to derive a nifty equation for predicting the tension of the string. Developed by Jeffrey Wetherhold. Includes instructions.
