The kit uses a combination of teacher-directed lessons and student activities to help students understand the motions of the Moon and how to interpret them. Primarily, students will employ framework concepts of Earth's Place in the Universe (ESS1) to learn about the phases of the Moon, as well as the difference between a lunar (synodic) month and a sidereal month.



Pre and Post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words all target specific Science and Engineering Practices and common core standards. The teacher's guide contains specific "Did You Know" concepts. A student copy master is also included. Materials are provided for 10 groups.

Ordering information: This activity contains 10 sun models, 10 earth models, 10 moon models, 10 moon reference markers, 10 zip-lock plastic storage bags, 30 caps, 1 set of 3 transparencies, 1 pad of 100 "orbit the moon" sheets, and a teacher's and student's guide. Flashlights, masking tape, pencils, an overhead projector, and washable marking pens are required.
