Students will acquire real-world biotechnology skills as they simulate a scenario as employees at a company in the drug discovery business.

Introduce students to the world of commercial biotechnology by using DNA restriction analysis, bacterial transformation, and protein purification
Time requirement four, 45 min. sessions

Take students on an adventure starting in the rainforest in the Andes, continuing to a biotechnology company engaged in developing new pharmaceutical compounds, and finally to the Food and Drug Administration.

In the two modules included in this kit, students will grow a bacterial library, clone a gene of interest, express and purify the resulting protein, and simulate taking that protein to market as a new 'drug'.
