Students will acquire real-world biotechnology skills as they simulate a scenario as employees at a company in the drug discovery business.
- Introduce students to the world of commercial biotechnology by using DNA restriction analysis, bacterial transformation, and protein purification
- Time requirement four, 45 min. sessions
Take students on an adventure starting in the rainforest in the Andes, continuing to a biotechnology company engaged in developing new pharmaceutical compounds, and finally to the Food and Drug Administration.
In the two modules included in this kit, students will grow a bacterial library, clone a gene of interest, express and purify the resulting protein, and simulate taking that protein to market as a new 'drug'.
