This modular, multi-part, laboratory course guides students through a molecular biology workflow identical to that performed in a working science lab.
- Apply molecular biology skills and techniques to complete a real-world research project
- Make mistakes, learn from them and still complete every step of the workflow
- Students clone, sequence, and analyze a housekeeping gene in the GAPDH family, taken from a plant of their choice
- The final sequencing and bioinformatics module allows each class to produce novel data
- Choose from five modules
Nucleic Acid Extraction Module: Allows students to extract plant nucleic acids and purify them by column chromatography.
GAPDH PCR Module: Allows students to amplify the GAPC gene from a plant.
PCR Kleen™ Spin Purification Module: Uses size exclusion chromatography (SEC) to remove unincorporated primers, nucleotides, salts, and enzymes from PCR products.
Ligation and Transformation Module: Allows the ligation of PCR products into the pJET1.2 plasmid vector for transformation of competent bacteria.
Sequencing and Bioinformatics Module: Used to sequence and analyze a portion of the GAPC gene.
