Innovating Science® Understanding Blood Type Interactions Through Simulated Blood Typing
Educational Classroom Kits and Activities
Learn about blood typing and how it is useful in blood transfusion science.

  • Students will use simulated blood to determine the ABO/Rh blood type of 4 individuals, one in need of a blood transfusion
  • Based on the results, students will determine which of the 3 potential donors would provide the best match for the patient in need
  • Aligned to NGSS practices
  • Performance expectations: MS-PS1-2, MS-LS3-2
  • Disciplinary core ideas: PS1.A, PS1.B, LS1.B, LS3.A, LS3.B
  • Cross cutting concepts include structure and function, cause and effect
  • Engineering practices include developing and using models
The earliest historical attempts at blood transfusions often had lethal results. These results led to the investigation and discovery of blood types, as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of antigen/antibody interactions. In this investigation, students will utilize Innovating Science's new simulated blood to determine the ABO/Rh blood type of four individuals, one in need of a transfusion. Based on the results, students will then determine which of three potential donors would provide the best match for the patient in need. Kit contains enough materials for 10 groups. Teacher's manual and student study guide copy masters are included.

Delivery information: Kit includes instructional manual and SDS booklet.
