Bio-Rad Laboratories offers research-level lab activities that are easily accessible to high school and college students. Each exemplary experiment is designed to bring trusted, reliable, repeatable results to the lab. With this activity, educators can provide students with authentic activities and apparatus that fully prepare them for future biotechnology study, applications, research, and careers.

Transformation is just one step in the process of creating novel proteins for medical, environmental, and research applications. Students also learn about how genetic engineers use the properties of designer proteins to isolate them from the complex mixture of bacterial proteins and ultimately apply them to address human needs. A colony of transformed bacteria is placed in liquid culture overnight then lysed to release their cellular contents. HIC columns purify GFP from the bacterial contaminants. The lab can be completed in three 45 minute lab sessions and includes materials for eight setups.

Ordering information: This kit contents include ampicillin (lyophilized), arabinose (lyophilized), lysozyme (lyophilized), LB nutrient broth capsule, binding buffer, a column equilibration buffer, a column wash buffer, an elution buffer, HIC chromatography columns, inoculation loops (sterile), disposable plastic transfer pipets, microcentrifuge tubes (2.0 mL, clear), cell culture tubes (15 mL, sterile), sample collection tubes (5 mL), a teacher’s guide, a student manual, and a graphic quick guide. The transformed bacterial colonies from pGLO bacterial transformation kit, UV lamps, and centrifuges are required but not included.
