Disposal

This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

 1. Add the substance to a twofold excess of 4% sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) solution. Stir. Place the solution in a fume hood.
 2. Let the reaction come to completion over the course of an hour.
 3. Neutralize the solution with either dilute sodium hydroxide or dilute sulfuric acid to about a pH of 7 if necessary.
 4. Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.

Solution Prep

To prepare 300 ml of bromine water, mix 100 ml of 1 M NaBr and 100 ml of 1 M HCl in a 400-ml beaker. Stir and then add 50 ml of 5% NaOCl. Dilute to a final volume of 300 ml with DI water. Bromine will evaporate over time so store in a bottle and a wrap the cap with parafilm for extended storage.
