Disposal

This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

 1. Add the substance to a twofold excess of 4% sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) solution. Stir. Place the solution in a fume hood.
 2. Add a small amount of sodium carbonate to the mixture to dissolve all of the iodine.
 3. Let the reaction come to completion over the course of an hour.
 4. Neutralize the solution with either dilute sodium hydroxide or dilute sulfuric acid to about a pH of 7 if necessary.
 5. Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.
