No, I didn't recommend
Does not work - Despite trying different organisms and calling the manufacture who recommended taping the connections the experiment still did not work. We were very disappointed in how this product preformed. The manufacturer reports that they have not sold this kit since 2008 because of numerous problems with it. I encourage Wards to discontinue selling this item. I have spoken to Wards and we are getting a

I am sorry to hear you had issues with this kit. I see your return has been processed. When you prepare for a similar lab activity next time, we would be glad to help you find an alternate item. I have contacted the supplier and believe I have identified the problem you were experiencing. From your comments it appears you were not able to retain a closed system while you were running the experiment. The most likely place for this to occur is where the tubing connects to the pipette. The easiest way to repair this problem is to insert the pipette into the tubing and then fold the tubing back over itself for a distance of 3-5mm. This is the way the material is shipped. During the chamber assembly it is relatively easy to unfold this accidentally. It is also possible that there is a leak where the cap enters the tube. The tube is designed for a very tight fit, but with heavy use, it may begin to wear. This can be sealed with a layer of petroleum jelly if necessary. Please let us know if neither of these solutions address the problems you were experiencing so we can bring any additional issues to the supplier.

Metabolism Experiment Kit
Educational Materials Biology Educational Materials Ecology Learning Activities
With the Metabolism Experiment Kit, students draw correlations between organism size, oxygen consumption, and temperature.

  • Time Required: One 50 Minute Class Period
  • Excellent Introduction to Metabolic Process
  • Teacher’s Guide with SDS Provided
Students measure the rate of oxygen consumption of small organisms such as insects, snails, worms, and germinating seeds. Using Patented (U.S. Pat. No. 3,581,737) LAB-AIDS® Metabolism chambers, they observe the organisms and draw correlations between the size of an organism and the temperature of the environment and oxygen consumption. They also calculate an organism’s respiratory rate in cubic cm of oxygen per hour, measure total gas change in a closed environment, and determine an organism’s metabolic relationship to total gas in a closed environment.

The kit includes two unbreakable chambers large enough for small animals and plants. One chamber is used to measure the organism's oxygen consumption, and the other serves as a control.

Ordering information: This kit includes metabolism chambers, carbon dioxide absorbent, capillary tubes with a connecting tube (calibrated), forceps, latticed organism holders with plastic retainers, index solution (colored, vial), student data cards, and a teacher’s guide with SDS. Animal or plant specimens for testing are needed but not included.
