How do buffers really work?

Add a strong acid or a strong base to a non-buffered solution and demonstrate, using a colorful pH indicator, that the pH quickly changes. Now add the same acid and base to a buffer solution and watch how the pH stays beautifully balanced. This demonstration allows you to teach what components are required for every buffer and then apply this to a common household buffer, Alka-Seltzer®. Summarize the lesson by testing the buffering ability of an Alka-Seltzer® solution and in another beautiful balancing act.
