Students will select one of the defined marine habitats. They will then design and “build” a fish suitable for that habitat. Students must give their fish an appropriate scientific name. Via discussion, students must defend their design in reference to the survival, behavior, and economic use in the habitat chosen. Older students will design a dichotomous key and do further research into possible “relatives” actually found in the habitat. Duration: two class periods, plus research time. Materials for eight student groups.
