Produced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and hosted by Griff Jones, these programs take students into the Institute’s Vehicle Research Center for a fascinating exploration of the science concepts behind car crashes. Using a series of vehicle maneuvers on a test track plus filmed results of vehicle crash tests, Jones explains concepts of physics and biology related to car crashes. In Its Basic Physics, inertia, the relationship between crash forces and inertia, momentum and impulse are related to the real world of cars and crashes. Where Physics Meets Biology examines the laws of nature that determine what happens to the human body in a crash, including how shockwaves can damage tissue and what happens at the cellular level. Both DVDs are extremely relevant to students and will make students think about automotive safety as well as science. Includes a 28-page manual with activities and worksheets. Duration of each: 22 minutes.
